We Were Made For These Times

My friends, do not lose heart. We were made for these times. I have heard from so many recently who are deeply and properly bewildered. They are concerned about the state of affairs in our world now. Ours is a time of almost daily astonishment and often righteous rage over the latest degradations of what matters most to civilized, visionary people.

You are right in your assessments. The lustre and hubris some have aspired to while endorsing acts so heinous against children, elders, everyday people, the poor, the unguarded, the helpless, is breathtaking. Yet, I urge you, ask you, gentle you, to please not spend your spirit dry by bewailing these difficult times. Especially do not lose hope. Most particularly because, the fact is that we were made for these times. Yes. For years, we have been learning, practicing, been in training for and just waiting to meet on this exact plain of engagement.

I grew up on the Great Lakes and recognize a seaworthy vessel when I see one. Regarding awakened souls, there have never been more able vessels in the waters than there are right now across the world. And they are fully provisioned and able to signal one another as never before in the history of humankind.

Look out over the prow; there are millions of boats of righteous souls on the waters with you. Even though your veneers may shiver from every wave in this stormy roil, I assure you that the long timbers composing your prow and rudder come from a greater forest. That long-grained lumber is known to withstand storms, to hold together, to hold its own, and to advance, regardless.

In any dark time, there is a tendency to veer toward fainting over how much is wrong or unmended in the world. Do not focus on that. There is a tendency, too, to fall into being weakened by dwelling on what is outside your reach, by what cannot yet be. Do not focus there. That is spending the wind without raising the sails.

We are needed, that is all we can know. And though we meet resistance, we more so will meet great souls who will hail us, love us and guide us, and we will know them when they appear. Didn't you say you were a believer? Didn't you say you pledged to listen to a voice greater? Didn't you ask for grace? Don't you remember that to be in grace means to submit to the voice greater?

Ours is not the task of fixing the entire world all at once, but of stretching out to mend the part of the world that is within our reach. Any small, calm thing that one soul can do to help another soul, to assist some portion of this poor suffering world, will help immensely. It is not given to us to know which acts or by whom, will cause the critical mass to tip toward an enduring good.

What is needed for dramatic change is an accumulation of acts, adding, adding to, adding more, continuing. We know that it does not take everyone on Earth to bring justice and peace, but only a small, determined group who will not give up during the first, second, or hundredth gale.

One of the most calming and powerful actions you can do to intervene in a stormy world is to stand up and show your soul. Soul on deck shines like gold in dark times. The light of the soul throws sparks, can send up flares, builds signal fires, causes proper matters to catch fire. To display the lantern of soul in shadowy times like these - to be fierce and to show mercy toward others; both are acts of immense bravery and greatest necessity.

Struggling souls catch light from other souls who are fully lit and willing to show it. If you would help to calm the tumult, this is one of the strongest things you can do.

There will always be times when you feel discouraged. I too have felt despair many times in my life, but I do not keep a chair for it. I will not entertain it. It is not allowed to eat from my plate.

The reason is this: In my uttermost bones I know something, as do you. It is that there can be no despair when you remember why you came to Earth, who you serve, and who sent you here. The good words we say and the good deeds we do are not ours. They are the words and deeds of the One who brought us here. In that spirit, I hope you will write this on your wall: When a great ship is in harbor and moored, it is safe, there can be no doubt. But that is not what great ships are built for.

Call and Response.

Sometimes I find myself at the little church behind my house.  It's a Congregational church that's simple and intimate and I've met a few lovely people in the congregation who make eye contact with me and welcome me each time they notice I'm there.   The pastor and his sermons make sense to me, and so I find myself eager to attend when I am able.

This past Sunday, the first since the election, I made a point of going.

He began his sermon describing a practice called Call and Response.  A Call and Response is when a speaker calls something out and the congregation responds in unison.  The call and response he demonstrated was this:

Pastor: "God is good."
And then we the congregation responded: "All the time."

And then he posed this question:  Why do bad things happen to good people?

He shared about how God shows up in the world and where there might seem to be a void of God. He talked about how humans were given something called free will, and God respects our decision to use it to make choices.  He accounted for terrible atrocities that have been done since the beginning of time that have challenged the faith of even the most reverent and then he wondered out loud for those of us who have thought this many times;  "If God is so powerful and almighty, how can God allow  ___________ to happen? "

Then he invited us to step back and consider the arch and curve of our planet from the perspective of the cosmos, or even beyond into the infinite mystery of the universe with it's endless galaxies and to wonder at it.  He encouraged us to see beyond what is visible, beyond what limits us in our capacity to experience God in our own world.

And then, at the end of the sermon he called out again...

Pastor: "God is good."
And then we the congregation responded: "All the time."

I left feeling thoughtful and confused.  Why didn't he even once talk directly about the election and what happened, or iterate the many things going on or the great division between people now?

I came home and later I found this video.  I watched it and allowed myself to be awe-stuck and to wonder about all of the infinite mysteries that I will never have the answers to.  I came up with the obvious: faith. The only act I can practice over and over again is the act of faith, and to use my free will to love in the way that Jesus taught, and then I became more clear.  If we were made as humans to be all good, all the time, then we would be more like robots incapable of feeling or CHOOSING genuine love.

My theory ; Nothing of what we are doing out there that's creating divisiveness and fear has anything to do with God. That's on us.

I think God is always calling.

The question is:

Will we respond?

Too This, Too That.

Being tender and open is beautiful.
As a woman, I feel continually shush’ed.
Too sensitive, Too mushy, Too wishy washy.

Don’t let someone steal your tenderness. Don’t allow the coldness and fear of others to tarnish your perfectly vulnerable beating heart. Nothing is more powerful than allowing yourself to truly be affected by things. Whether it’s a song, a stranger, a mountain, a rain drop, a tea kettle, an article, a sentence, a footstep, feel it all – look around you. All of this is for you. Take it and have gratitude. Give it and feel love.  ~ Zooey Deschanel, American actress

Zooey is not alone. I have felt shush’ed for being Too needy, Too much, Too dramatic, Too out there… And the exposure of Donal Trump’s unapologetic “locker room talk” has made me profoundly aware of just how minimized we are as a feminine race, ALL of US,  around the world.

I had not yet truly grasped, comprehended, the magnitude of this imbalance. I have my own personal story of sexual abuse as do most women I know, but I was still living with it partially hidden inside the “numbing box”, a part of my heart that is used for the pieces of my life that I can’t live too close to because of the uncomfortableness and pain.  But Donald Trump has happened to us, and he has given us a gift! AND before you slam shut your computer, consider this; he is the voice of what “MUST NOT BE TOLERATED ANY LONGER.”  I am actually grateful for his BIG presence, because he is our wake up call, the clarion call of Intolerance.

Something broke inside my numbing box this week, something gave way to my deep sadness and devastation, over the profound understanding of just how much painful shit has been heaped on women for centuries, and that we as a people, men and women, have become tolerant and complacent with how far removed we are from caring tenderly for a woman. And do not underestimate the power in treating another human being with tenderness. It is our vulnerabilities that make us most human and approachable, and this is where the possibility of connection happens.  We have become soulfully disconnected from one another, and this is why we’ve been able to hurt so many women…we are too far from her to notice the human being living inside of her.

A powerful passage out of “Love Warrior” authored by Glennon Doyle Melton, speaks so well to this,

“Here I am, I am in here, I am more than you can see.  I am a soul and a mind, as well as a body—and all of me is saying no. Don’t do that to me.”

Someone once told me, “Men desire to be respected, and Women desire to be cherished.”  How often do you hear, the words “I demand to be respected!” But have you ever heard a woman say, “I demand to be cherished!”  It’s time- it’s time that we demand to be cherished, revered, treated equal in value, AND respected.  As does every human being on this earth. WE all have contributed to masculine and feminine imbalance.  We create our existences, we train the world how to be in relationship. The WE I’m referring to are our families, communities, societies, governments, and religions. But let us begin here, with ourselves, and show her a little tenderness.

Adrift is my soul,
no bearings,
no steady hand from the soul’s knowing, only air

Vertigo spinning out of control,
all one can do is cling to a chair rail

Damp white knuckled nose dive,
pull up, pull up

a pocket of unknown turbulence,
let go…

No choice but to go it alone but, I have the trees and they have me.

Beautiful words won’t change a damn thing.

It is in a dark crevice where scorpion and snake rest waiting to strike,
a flood wrecked bar bloodied with mud debris, as I search for treasure

a blind reach into blackness pulling out a shot glass brimming
with murky pain

Yet, another miracle, no deadly bite.

Can there be hope in a shot glass that once held tequila,

two women saluting to one another’s good graces.

Why not, it is still here, the invisible imprint of what the space once held,
a lingering of what has been lived.

Not even the flood of halloween can erase the love shared here.

I am adrift in unknown air, clenching the shot glass, remembering

I always recover.

Life's Arms

I give you to Life’s arms.

Go flap wildly, seeking the winds that will carry you, in your glorious human-mess.

I give you, my greatest lesson in loving unattached,

I give you to adventure…dark corners of unknown soul searching,

Newfound joy on stones warmed by sunlight, as the skin on your back lies across them.

My son, I give you to life.

I wish for you to receive it lustfully; be greedy and indulge, explore, saturate your bones, mind, and soul with the feel, touch, smell, taste, and sound of being a boy becoming a man.

Scream your warrior cry from a mountain peak, view a star studded sky from a canoe, feel the sacredness of a rose petal soft breast under your finger tips, taste the bounty of mother earth, relish every gift.

Open your good mind again and again, be without knowing,

and ask questions.

When you are too much in your head, MOVE and serve others.

Share everything; yourself, your possessions, life will be far richer this way.

Dance, trust your body, it holds the wisdom,

And laugh, laugh until you cry,

Cry until you find exhausted peace…it is within you.

Be delightfully surprised by others and their stories, do not assume anything.

People are most alike in the human condition; we want to belong to someone,
we fear we are not enough, we want to love and be loved.

Yet, our individual stories of how we dance with desire is unique…get curious about the stories.

And know this most importantly, I am with you as I give you to life’s arms, I am always and forever with you dear son.

The truth is you were never truly mine in the first place, no one owns another,
we were blessed to be brought together by the cosmos.

It is my deepest honor to care for you, teach you, be taught by you, and to love you.

Now go find your wind and flap wildly.

We Were Not Meant To Journey Alone.

Revelation: We were not meant to journey alone.

I figured this out after becoming an island; isolating myself from others to save myself from judgement, hurt, and misunderstanding only to realize that at one time or another, we all try this strategy, and it does not work.   It doesn't work because the majority of the journey is revealed through experiences with "other".

Truth be told I was especially intimidated and confused by women, and challenged by what society had trained me to believe about myself based on my assigned gender. I was finding that underneath all the ‘bull-shit’ we’d been taught to believe, there IS so much more waiting for us to claim it.

When I did my Revelation Project, I was able to see many illusions that have kept me from truths about who I really am, and what I am truly capable of.  I’ve been able to bust myths and limiting stories I’d created about myself.

It's been important to me that The Revelation Project be a safe place,  for women to explore and reveal themselves to one another without the fear of being invalidated, dismissed, or judged.  In particular, our team and growing sisterhood is invested in the empowerment of women everywhere, and altering the perceptions that minimize our value, power, or contribution in the world.

At TRP we do not empower women at the exclusion of men,  in fact, we believe that sustainable change is available  by creating a new system of inclusion.
together, I believe we can co-create the future.

All of this begins with the origin of each personal experience of The Revelation Project, and that common feature isYOU.
At the very center of you there awaits a wisdom that will guide you, so go in-(sight) and reveal with us. At TRP we share our discoveries, and we seek to understand.

Don’t worry about “fitting in”  here.  It’s best if we all just be our unique selves. .   What matters most is that each of us get the opportunity to discover an authentic voice without all the pretending and pretense that’s been layered on top. TRP is about being part of a “sisterhood”, a “good hood” , and a sense of belonging to each other so we can all discover a deep and powerful truth, individually and as a community.

I’m so happy you are here… whether or not you do our workshops, e-courses, or come to our gatherings- I want you to know that you matter here, and you are accepted- exactly as you are.

Nobody's perfect, and many times I have to remind myself to live from a place of intention. Heres's are some of mine, how about yours?

  • I live my life from the intention that my capacity for greatness is endless (I’m getting better at this).
  • I live inside of the possibility that what I have to say matters, and that I have a right to be heard, and treated with kindness.
  • I live my life with the understanding that the world is populated by my sisters and brothers and that we are all connected.
  • I live my life trusting that all is as it should be, and that more will be revealed when the universe wants to reveal it, or when we are truly ready to receive it.
  • I live from the belief that I am here to define the world, and not have the world define ME.
